"United.. .2860 turn right heading 345," and Flight 2860 replied, "345, twenty eight sixty." The nose gear light failed to illuminate after the landing The tower immediately responded, "United 2860, you're too close to the terrain on the right side for a (right) turn back to the VOR, make a left turn back to the VOR." The National Transportation Safety Board accident report answers that question, although the investigation was severely handicapped because the critical cockpit voice recorder malfunctioned. The controller immediately told Flight 2860 it was close to terrain on its right, and to institute an immediate left turn. It's free! A few seconds later at 1:38:00 the controller said, "Okay, climb immediately to maintain 8,000 [feet]." These documents are sacred. More than 100 searchers unsuccessfully combed the area through the darkness and deep snow, finally abandoning the effort until daylight. Those 8 seconds of hesitation were deadly. All three occupants of the cargo flight were killed in the crash.

A helicopter rescue crew from Hill Air Force Base was first to find the crash scene at 10:00 a.m., more than eight hours after the plane went down. The plane then switched radio frequencies and contacted United's maintenance control center in San Francisco.

The flight contacted maintenance, and informed they were having electrical trouble, and that several landing gear lights were inoperative.
At 1:37:26 a.m., Flight 2860 finally returned to the control tower frequency and said "Hello Salt Lake, United 2860 we're back." :
Not receiving a response, the controller repeated his instructions, which Flight 2860 responded to.
