The materials used in the new building namely concrete, natural slate, sandstone, industrial brick and steel (including rivets) all hark back to Coatbridge in the nineteenth century as one of the main centres for the production of iron and a major contributor to the Industrial Revolution. Home to an amazing array of working machinery and interactive displays, the exhibition hall is a fascinating, hands-on glimpse into Lanarkshire’s history. Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life in Coatbridge occupies a site that links some of the key stories of Scotland’s industrial development.Site of the Summerlee Iron Works (1836), the only excavated first-generation hot-blast pig iron works, the museum is also home to a branch of the Monkland Canal, designed by James Watt to transport coal from the mineral-rich Monklands area to Glasgow and beyond.
