Radar - or radio detecting and ranging - was one of the most important factors in the success of Britain’s air defences during the Battle of Britain.. Radar could be used to detect and locate incoming enemy aircraft. Technology was playing an increasingly important role in the war; the RAF’s Chain Home radar networks were instrumental in defeating the German Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. This gave fighter defences vital time to prepare for and intercept the attacks.Radar wasn't always accurate and didn't produce a complete picture of the incoming threat - additional intelligence was provided by the Observer Corps. During the Battle of Britain these stations were able to detect enemy aircraft at any time of day and in any weather conditions.

On 7 July 1941, the defence of Iceland was transferred from Britain to the United States, which was still a neutral country until five months later. Although they did attack some stations, only The use of radio waves to detect objects beyond the range of sight was first developed into a practical technology by British scientists and engineers in the 1930s.

By the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Watson-Watt had designed and installed a chain of radar stations along the East and South coast of England.

By 1940 the chain was completed with the addition of Chain Home Low (CHL) stations, which could detect low-flying aircraft.Britain wasn’t alone in its use of radar; it had actually been invented in Germany.

The bases are usually located in woody areas convenient to arterial roads, railway lines, and the other domestic infrastructure they were meant to disrupt.
Most of the air (and naval) actions in World War II fought with radar at UHF and below. Radar - Radar - Advances during World War II: The opening of higher frequencies (those of the microwave region) to radar, with its attendant advantages, came about in late 1939 when the cavity magnetron oscillator was invented by British physicists at the University of Birmingham.

Unattended radar operation with little downtime for repairs was demanded of manufacturers for such applications as The first ballistic missile defense radars were conceived and developed in the mid-1950s and 1960s.

Early U.S. radar equipment operated at 200 MHz.

It worked by sending out radio waves which would bounce off solid objects at a distance, enabling operators to estimate four important things about approaching raids: the range (distance), bearing (direction), strength and height.Radar gave early warning of approaching raids.

Terminal Doppler weather radars (TDWR) were installed at or near major airports to warn of dangerous wind shear during takeoff and landing. SCR-270 Radar in the United States . Radio waves with wavelengths in the centimetre range can be beamed by a reflector, like light in an automobile headlamp, to make up a radar system.

As previously explained, the Doppler frequency shift of the reflected signal results from the relative motion between the target and the radar. The narrowness of the beam depends on the length of the waves and on the width of… CH Stations were radar stations covering the east and south coasts of Britain. This information filtered through Fighter Command HQ and was then communicated throughout the defence network.
